Tan Tlang

Tan Tlang, located near Vaphai Village in Champhai District, is a site of considerable cultural and mythological significance in Mizo traditional narratives. The mountain occupies an important place in the folklore and belief systems of the Mizo people, particularly in relation to traditional accounts of interactions between human beings and supernatural beings.

According to Mizo legends and oral traditions, the ancestors of the Mizo people were believed to have encountered various supernatural beings, often described as demons, spirits, or fiends. These encounters were not always portrayed as hostile; traditional narratives describe instances where humans established relationships with these beings through friendship, cooperation, and even marriage alliances.

One of the most prominent legends associated with Tan Tlang concerns a maiden named Chawngtinleri, who is believed to have become the wife of Lalchungnunga, the demon chief of Tan Mountain. Tan Tlang is traditionally regarded as the dwelling place of the chief of the supernatural beings and his wife. According to legend, Chawngtinleri was entrusted with the responsibility of protecting and overseeing all wild animals in the forest. The mountain is therefore viewed not only as a geographical feature but also as a sacred cultural landscape associated with guardianship, harmony, and respect for nature.
