Sikpui Lung, Mura Puk and Hmanlai Lungziak
Zote Village, Champhai District

Sikpui Lung, Mura Puk, and Hmanlai Lungziak form an important archaeological and cultural heritage complex near Zote Village in Champhai District. The site encompasses ancient rock-cut caves, megalithic monuments, and rock engravings, representing significant evidence of the region's prehistoric and early historic cultural landscape.
Mura Puk is a group of six man-made caves excavated into a small hill near Zote Village. Each cave has a distinct opening, and together they demonstrate an advanced understanding of rock-cut excavation. According to oral traditions, the caves were constructed as repositories for the dead and were likely used for mortuary purposes. Such funerary caves are rare in Mizoram.
Adjacent to the caves is a large flat stone monument known locally as Sikpui Lung. Local tradition holds that the stone was erected to commemorate the Sikpui Festival, one of the most significant traditional festivals of the Hmar people — a thanksgiving and communal celebration following a successful harvest.
The site's significance has been further enhanced by the recent discovery of Hmanlai Lungziak (ancient rock engravings), accidentally uncovered by workers preparing for stone quarrying near the caves. The engravings depict human figures, animals, and various weapons on the surface of a large boulder. Such petroglyphs are comparatively rare in Mizoram.
Taken together, the three features illustrate the mortuary practices, megalithic traditions, artistic expressions, and cultural beliefs of ancient communities in eastern Mizoram.
