Mangkhaia Lung

Zotlang Village, near Champhai Town

Mangkhaia Lung is an important megalithic monument situated within a cluster of ancient stone monuments at Zotlang Village, located near Champhai Town in eastern Mizoram. The concentration of megaliths at Zotlang reflects the custom of erecting stone monuments to honour distinguished individuals, commemorate important events, and signify social status.

Among the numerous megaliths at the site, one prominent standing stone, or menhir, is locally known as Mangkhaia Lung. According to local oral tradition, the monument commemorates Mangkhaia, who is believed to have been the son of a Ralte chief. Historical traditions further suggest that the Ralte people occupied this part of the region prior to the migration and settlement of the Lushai (Mizo) community.

Although the precise date and original purpose of the monument have yet to be established through scientific archaeological investigation, the menhir represents an important example of Mizoram's megalithic tradition and a reminder of earlier phases of human occupation in the Champhai region.
