Pipute Lamlian

Farkawn, Vaphai and Vangchhia, Champhai District

Pipute Lamlian is an ancient route of considerable archaeological and historical significance that extends through the villages of Farkawn, Vaphai, and Vangchhia in Champhai District. It is regarded as one of the earliest surviving transportation corridors in the region and is believed, according to local tradition, to have been constructed and used by the ancient inhabitants of the area.

Oral traditions maintain that the route originally began in present-day Myanmar and continued westward across the Tiau River into present-day Mizoram, passing through several settlements before extending further inland. The route is therefore closely associated with the migration traditions of the Mizo people.

Throughout much of its course, the pathway has been deliberately excavated into the natural terrain to a depth of approximately three to four feet, creating a well-defined sunken road. In several sections, particularly where the terrain is rocky or uneven, large boulders and stone slabs have been carefully laid to provide a stable and durable surface. The scale and quality of construction imply that Pipute Lamlian was not merely a village footpath but an important regional route facilitating movement, communication, trade, and cultural interaction among early settlements.
