Old Settlement Site at Vangchhia
Near Vangchhia Village, Champhai District
The Old Settlement Site at Vangchhia is one of the most significant archaeological landscapes in Mizoram, located near Vangchhia Village in Champhai District. The site covers an extensive area of more than one kilometre in width and contains a remarkable concentration of archaeological remains, indicating the existence of a large and well-established settlement in the past.
Archaeological remains discovered within the settlement area include numerous potsherds, remnants of ancient structures, old habitation sites, traditional pathways, and rock engravings. The presence of pottery fragments suggests developed domestic activities, including food preparation and storage. The remains of old building sites provide information about architectural traditions and settlement arrangements, while the ancient routes indicate organised movement and communication networks.
The rock engravings found in and around the site represent the artistic expressions and symbolic traditions of the people who occupied the area. The extensive nature of the site suggests that Vangchhia was not merely a temporary habitation area but may have served as an important centre of human activity for a considerable period.
Recognizing the exceptional archaeological value of the site, the Art and Culture Department, Government of Mizoram, has undertaken exploration and research activities at Vangchhia to document and study the remains.
