Cluster of Old Monoliths & Old Settlement Site at Lianpui

Near the entrance of Lianpui Village

The Cluster of Old Monoliths and Old Settlement Site at Lianpui Village represents an important archaeological and cultural heritage site reflecting the region's rich megalithic tradition and early settlement history. Located near the entrance of Lianpui Village, the site consists of a remarkable group of ancient monolithic stones bearing intricate embossed carvings on their surfaces.

The monoliths are distinguished by various carved figures and decorative motifs engraved or embossed on their façades, believed to depict elements associated with the beliefs, social life, and ceremonial practices of ancient communities. Such megalithic structures are generally associated with commemorative practices, social status, ritual activities, or the remembrance of significant individuals and events.

According to local historical traditions, the present-day settlement of Lianpui Village was established by a chief named Lianpuia. However, oral accounts maintain that the monolithic monuments were already existing at their present location even before Chief Lianpuia founded the village, suggesting an earlier phase of human occupation.

Recognising the exceptional archaeological and historical significance of the site, the Cluster of Old Monoliths at Lianpui has been placed under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
